How to Start a Kindness Chain in Your Neighbourhood

A practical guide to launching a Puzzle4Life™ kindness chain where each piece is passed on rather than kept.

For Neighbourhood organisers, faith groups, and local clubs · Updated 2026-08-04

A kindness chain differs from a kindness campaign in one respect: nobody keeps the piece. Each recipient passes it on within a week, and the piece accumulates a history on its back.

Start with seven pieces, not seventy

Seven pieces released into a neighbourhood will travel further in three months than seventy handed out at an event, because each one requires a decision to pass on.

Design the back as a ledger

The back of a chain piece is a list, not a letter.

    • Each holder adds their first name and the date
    • One line about why they are passing it to the next person
    • A short code or QR linking to the chain's page

Set one rule and repeat it

Hold it for a week, then pass it to someone who showed you the trait. Any additional rule reduces the chance the chain survives its third hop.

Publish where the pieces have been

A simple public page showing each piece's route is what keeps a chain alive. People pass a piece on because they want to see where it goes next.

    Bring the chain home

After six months, invite every holder to one gathering and assemble the returned pieces. The ledgers on the backs are the entire story of the event.
